SNAP

Short film 2014

This short film tells the story of one night in 1982, when an invitation to a hat party leads to our young protagonist unexpectedly facing a rite of passage. Set in an era when to be young and middle class was to be carefree and comfortable and the confidence for self-expression could manifest itself in the realms of the New Romantics and the Sloane Ranger, this nostalgic nod to our own adolescence takes an affectionate look back at a time that was arguably simpler. Jane directed, from a screenplay by Isobel and our DOP was Simon Walton. Music was specially composed by Shashie and the Editor was Tim Hodges.

Shot over one weekend in our own house in Bristol, Fitzherberts Inc. were lucky enough to draw upon a deep well of professional talent  in and around the West Country, giving us the benefit of years of industry experience and expertise. In addition we cast our young ensemble of players from a pool of local, mostly untried talent so it was very much a home-grown project. Some of those we cast have gone on to have successful careers within the industry, and many of our crew who "stepped-up" to take on more senior roles for the first time have continued to flourish and advance within their fields. With Bristol as a backdrop and a cleverly composed 1980s style soundtrack, SNAP gave us the opportunity to show off our ambitions and abilities, whilst telling a sweet and funny story. The final film premiered at The Arnolfini in the Summer of 2014 and was entered into several festivals. Sadly we didn't come away with the laurels but we did gain some extremely positive and useful feedback which made the whole undertaking worthwhile. Watch Snap by clicking on the link below.

BETTY

Short film 2015

We shot Betty as a fun project whilst on holiday in Sennen, Cornwall. All we had was one purloined lamp and our trusty Panasonic cam-corder, but we attempted to make a mildly disturbing psychological thrillerette in the style of guerrilla film-makers everywhere. Edited on an iPad using iMovie it was never going to be technically brilliant but we think it achieved a certain noirish atmosphere. Take a look for yourselves, and revel in the appearance of Gertie, our trusty and much beloved rescue Staffie who sadly slipped her mooring earlier this year, just shy of her 15th birthday. We love you Gertie.

HAWYS LEFRAY

A novel

I wrote a novel and completed it during lockdown. It's the kind of historical adventure story I wish I could have read when I was a girl. Something like The Eagle of The Ninth but with a girl at its centre. I envisage it as the first book in a trilogy. I'm still editing and currently working on a screenplay version for television. I believe it would make a great series.

What it's about

Hawys LeFray is one girl’s daredevil, sword-wielding, coming of age, coming out story, set against the brutal backdrop of medieval patriarchy but jam-packed with sisterhood, humour, love and redemption.

‘You’re going to the House of Flint. Your life is as good as over, sister!’

Sixteen-year-old bride-to-be, Hawys LeFray, has done something bad. Very bad. And now she must take her punishment which, in 14th century England, means banishment to a remote Northern convent run by the unnerving Abbess, known as The Lady. In this historical adventure story Hawys must learn to navigate the weird Sisters and cold cloisters of Flint House as well as her own nature, all of which harbour dangerous but thrilling secrets. For what Hawys fears is an ending, turns out to be the start of something totally unexpected and life changing.
